Where Is the Fucking Happiness is a pop-up solo exhibition by visual artist Krista Autio
(born in Tampere, Finland, lives and works in Brussels, Belgium).
For the seventh time in a row, Finland has taken first place in the World Happiness Report's ranking of the world's happiest countries in 2024. According to the European Drug Report 2022, Finland is also the European country with the highest percentage of drug-related deaths among people under 25. A strong dualism characterizes Finland: On the one hand, it is a country with one of the best-functioning societies in the world; on the other hand, it is a place where loneliness and sadness often prevail. These two contrasting realities raise various questions. Therefore, artist Krista Autio asks herself: Where does the happiness always associated with Finland come from? Do Finns live happier lives than the inhabitants of any other country in the world?
The figure depicted in Autio’s work is enveloped within a black forest. There is no sadness in their eyes, not even the hint of a smile, they are immobile in the vastness of nature surrounding them. Finland has the “jokamiehen oikeudet”, the “everyman's right” to experience the forest and enjoy nature. The character portrayed in the painting returns to their familiar nature, their place of refuge, and together with their only companions, a dog spotted with the colors of Finland, a bottle of wine and a cigarette, they wistfully think back to their happy moments and perhaps finds them not so much in the joy of past experiences, but in the stability, in the things that remain.
The inherent ambiguity in this fragment of life echoes some of the most dystonic Finnish realities: the relationship to alcohol; to nature; to animals, which for some people are their only company and only love. For Autio, happiness is to be experienced subjectively, without dogma or fixed rules, so her work and the questions they raise remain open to individual interpretation.
